Well, my lady and I are in it to win it. We were considering our 5 year plans, and were going to take over one piece of property from her father - the one that is essentially a boneyard for ancient cars - to fix up to live in within a few years. Instead of that we have been back and forth with him about taking over his garage property right on Mount Desert Island. This consists of 2 large garages, both 2.5 stories tall, roughly 40ft x 20-25ft. The plan is to renovate the smaller one of the two and build it up from the studs in as living space, and keep the other one as working space for a few things I am planning for work, in case my company doesn’t want to let me telecommute when we are ready to make the move. Also being surrounded by Acadia National Park doesn’t suck, like this

And a 5 minute walk away through the park is the fish house her dad will keep custodianship and rights to - but will be right there as a bunk house for visitors and such (he still fishes out of it)

Fish House

So this is going to take some money and a whole lot of time. But I feel you can’t buy an opportunity like this without a huge investment. I am hoping to be out of it for $30-40K with my own time and skills invested - and alot of beer bought for people to clean up the property. The garages and property are paid off, just have a tax liability. End result, I am going to have an enormous garage and a house I built to my own spec within a footprint - with a garage door still on it to roll stuff in :) right in such a gorgeous location. I have exactly one pic of one building I took when we were there last fall of the property. The sun was right behind so it sucks, but we will be up July 3rd to start measuring everything up and taking a ton of pics to start brainstorming with. This is the main garage and office, the other is off to the left and is a similar design, slightly smaller, but all the windows are in place.

I was so ready to leave this state a few years back for an adventure, but sometimes it is worth sticking with a thing long enough for things to turn in your favor. On an even better note I don’t have to travel 3.5 hours to go grab the Invicta and the Goliath. They will have a home next time we go up.

Enjoy a couple more pics of the property as it is now. (yeah it needs a serious clean up)

Kinja'd!!!

Random lobster shack her dad used to run on the property

Also this is a 5 minute walk in the other direction in another barn in the family. Maybe I can DD it since we will be moving back to the old neighborhood :)

That is amazingly cool. I wish I had something like that here in MN.

I can see why you didn’t go with trying to take over the Mine Mausoleum straight off. This should work as an FOB for doing triage there, of course.

This sounds like an awesome project, and the scenery looks lovely!

I love cars and motorcycles and working on them, but sometimes I find the prospect of a garage and workshop even more exciting because then there’s almost no limit to the amount of trouble I can get myself in.

Oh we have a few lakes (11000 or so) I just don’t own any property. Especially in the north woods. Oh well, if I can stay here when I'm done with school I'll fix that.

haha yeah the other one is too deep. Like close to superfund levels of scary with all the stuff rotting out there. This is an easier cleanout and organize job. But we can use this for triage all day long.

The garage office on the working garage will even be separate heated quarters as a 1bd + loft (already set up as such with heat, needs DEEP cleaning)

Nudge nudge, wink wink

I operated with no limit in my other house till I split with the ex. Then it has gotten a bit tough to go over and use the space although we will co-own it for over a decade more

I think it is time to lose my filter again

I was in a similar boat - when I was up in Groton a shipmate bought a house and I rented space from him, but he was out to sea a lot and I was on med hold so I pretty much ran the place. Since 2008 it’s been apartment living though. I can occasionally go home and use the folks place, but it’s an hour+ up the road so it’s not conducive to projects that take a long time. My wife and I are starting to look for a house, and I’m really pushing for a garage so I can setup shop.

I think you need to lose the filter too, can’t wait to see what kind of projects you turn out.

it reminds me of some horror movie or the Langoliers or something. I think there was a bunch of beer and lobster juice on my lens. Tis the secret

Langoliers, throw back on that one.

Best toaster to the face scene ever on caught on camera, hahaha.

I don’t eat seabugs so I’ll never be able to make epic photos like this then.

Best scene from the whole movie - toaster to the face bitch!

And congrats by the way. On things going well with the GF and with the land grab.
